Pillowcase Dress Kit Winner

Thank you everyone who participated in our Weekend Link Up Party to raise awareness of Dress a Girl Around the World. I hope that you are all encouraged to sew a dress or two (or more) for underprivilaged girls. Don't forget to upload a picture to our Dress A Girl Link Up.

We had several really cute projects linked up this weekend. But, since Valentine's Day is tomorrow and we've been on a heart theme lately, I'm really loving the lavendar heart sachets from Sleeping or Sewing. I have 3 lavendar bushes so this would be a great project for my vintage sheet scraps.

I offered a little prize this week for those who played along. A pillowcase dress kit which incudes a vintage embroidered pillowcase, bias tape for the straps, and elastic. And, the winner is . . . .

Weekend Link Up Party

This week, instead of having a traditional sponsor, we have a service opportunity. The Vintage Sheet Blog is a very talented and creative community. We have an opportunity to use our skills to help impoverished girls around the world. We can sew pillowcase dresses for Dress a Girl Around the World.

Dress a Girl Around the World is part of Hope 4 Kids International. They distribute handmade dresses to girls who may not otherwise have a dress. I helped organize a sewing event at my church in 2010 where we completed over 50 dresses for Dress a Girl. It was a lot of fun and a great project for beginning sewers.

This is a long-term project. I created a Pillowcase Dress Page on the Vintage Sheet Blog where we can share our dresses as we make them. The page also includes information on making and mailing the dresses. I hope that you will help this great cause. Who knows, your creation might be worn by a girl in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the islands, or the U.S.

The Prize

Now, back to our weekend link up. Our prize this week is a pillowcase dress kit from me.

It includes a green embroidered pillowcase, 2 7" pieces of elastic, and 2 pieces of 32" pink bias tape. Add some thread and about an hour of your time and you can make a dress for a needy girl. :)

I Heart Vintage Sheets

I love reader tips and submissions. I love vintage sheets and I love hearts. So, I was super excited to get an email from Tammie telling me about a lovely project tutorial on her blog, Craftytammie.

Go to her blog for a wonderful tutorial from Heather from quilt.cook.keep on how to make a baby quilt with a cute heart pattern from vintage sheets. I love the sheets she used. All the patterns work really well together. Tammie also has a little vintage sheet giveaway.

Finding Vintage Sheets: Estate Sales

A great source for vintage sheets is estate sales. Estate sales are sales for the purpose of liquidating the contents of a home because of a death or for some other reason like facilitating a move to a nursing home. Because the contents of the home usually belong to an older person, the items are typically vintage.

The following are some tips for scoring great sheets for a great price at estate sales.

Finding an Estate Sale
Shopping at estate sales can be a little tricky because the location is always different. It takes a little bit of planning but it can be really fun and rewarding. There are many companies that specialize in hosting estate sales. Most have their own websites and email lists. I encourage you to find out who these companies are in your area and getting on their lists.

My go-to source for finding upcoming estate sales is EstateSales.Net. They have a clickable map for the U.S. and Canada that can alert you to upcoming sales. I also strongly recommend signing up for their email list. They advertise the sales of multiple companies who belong to their network.

craigslist

Craigslist is a good source for folks living outside of the U.S. and Canada. It also has ads for a lot of sales that are conducted by smaller companies or by the families themselves.

I've also had some luck finding estate sales on PennysaverUSA. Just put "estate sale" in the find box, put in your city, and then specify the number of miles away you are willing to go. Like Craigslist, these are often conducted by smaller companies and by families.

And, don't forget to check your local newspaper. Estate sales are listed in the classified ads.

Before the sale

Estate Sales are all a little different but there are some common threads. Read the details of the sale before you go but some good things to remember are:

Get there early. Sometimes only a limited number of shoppers are allowed in the home at a time. You may need to grab a number or sign a list.
Go on the first day of the sale for the best selection. However, you might get lucky on a later day of the sale and get your items for a reduced price as the sale winds down.
Bring cash. Not all companies accept credit cards. And, even if they do take cards, using cash can sometimes lead to a discounted price.
Bring your own bags.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You might have to stand around a long time or have to crouch down to get to the good stuff.

At the Sale

There are many people who are estate sale "regulars." Don't feel threatened by these folks. They may be Ebay Sellersm antique dealerm or avid collectors. You might hear some interesting chit chat from them and you might even make a new friend. Also,

Check drawers and closets (unless marked otherwise.)
Check the garage. It may be an unlikely spot but sometimes there are hidden gems out there.
Don't be afraid to ask for a lower price. Some sales have posted prices, others not so much. Have in mind how much you want to spend for your items before you go to check out.

Finding vintage sheets at an estate sale can be hit or miss. You probably won't find "vintage sheets" listed in the sale description or pictured in the posted photos. You might see the words, "vintage linens" which could mean old towels, tablecloths or doilies. It's a gamble but it just might pay off.

Great Vintage Sheet Weekend

You know you've had a good weekend of vintage sheet thrifting when your laundry line looks like this on Tuesday morning:

I was visiting some friends out of town and stumbled upon what I'll call "Thrift Shop Row." There were 5 thrift shops within walking distance of each other. I picked up about 2 sheets at each store. Score!

So, I'm thinking about writing a post with all of our tips for scoring vintage sheets. Help me out please. How do you find your vintage sheets? Online? Thrift Stores? Estate or garage sales? Do you shop when you are out of town? How do you find great stores? What do you look for as far as size, quality, condition, etc.?

Any other tips? I think it will be a fun post.

Jamma Bottoms Part 2

So, I shared that I made pajama bottoms for my family for Christmas gifts using Tamara's Don't Get Out of Bed Tutorial. I didn't share the bottoms that I made for my mum, niece and oldest sister (I have 3 sisters.)

I also didn't share my sewing mishaps. I took a day off of work to sew. I called it "Sew Day." I thought I had the whole day planned out so I can get 5 jammas done in one day. The plan was to start with my mum's pajamas but I didn't follow Tamara's rule about stretching the waist out when making a pattern so the waist came out too small. In fact, it was too small for 3 people and too big for the other 2. Basically, it would only fit me. I was hitting myself that I took a day off of work to sew myself a pair of pj bottoms.

The next tricky part was making my little sister's bottoms because they live in Arizona and I didn't have pants to make a pattern. Using their measurements and my own skinniest pair of pants as a guide, I made their pants. I ended up taking in the sides multiple times trying to get the right amount of skinny for my youngest sister. The other sister go cuffed pj's because I made them too long.

When I made the pattern for my oldest sister's pj's (top picture, right hand side), I forgot to stretch out the crotch. So, I had to patch a crotch piece on. Luckilly her pants have a very busy pattern so it's not obvious.

Holy moly, what a process. But, I got them all finished in time for Christmas. Everyone loves them and no one can tell all the oops that happened along the way. I'll just call them learning experiences.

Isn't that the way sewing or creating anything homemade is sometimes. As Julia Child used to say, "you are alone in the kitchen." She was so wise.

Alphabet Letters Update

Vintage Sheet Blog readers are the best! Several of you left comments on the ABC letters that I posted this week. There were great suggestions about making lower case letters and numbers and that I need to turn my j over. :)

Vintage Sheet Alphabet Letters Tips

My niece turned 3 on Christmas day. Like all 3 year-olds she is obsessed with little things and with reading. Using Holly's wonerful tutorial I created a letter set using vintage sheet scraps mixed in with some newer fabric scraps that had a lot of purple (my niece's favorite color.) I learned a few lessons along the way so here are my tips if you want to make your own vintage sheet letters using Holly's tutorial:

Use vintage sheet scraps with less white space.

Use bulk cut felt instead of quilt batting.

Outline your cut out letter onto your fabric and felt sandwich with a disappearing marker.

Sew around your letter with contrasting thread.

See how the pink blends in but the teal stands out

Use pinking shears for a more feminine look.

Don't forget the L.

Next I'll be making a little bag for her to store her letters. And, an L. :)

I hope these tips help you create your own letters. Holly also includes a magnet inside her letters. I skipped the magnet and just made soft letters that she can manipulate. Hope she likes them.

I love reader submissions. :) Mrs. Mordecai from Be It Ever So Humble emailed me about this adorable dress she sewed for her little Tiger Lily. I love the vintage sheet she chose and the cheery green buttons are the perfect embellishment.

Polka Dot Pajamas

Is everyone else as busy as I am sewing gifts for loved ones? Using Tamara from Ducky House's Don't Get Out of Bed Pants tutorial, I am making pajama bottoms from thrifted sheets for my 3 sisters, niece, mum and myself. Here are the pjs that I made for my 13 and 15 year-old sisters.

The pants I made for myself are out of the exact same vintage sheet as Tamara's tutorial.

I'm doing the waist a little different than the tutorial. Instead of doing an elastic waistband, I did a drawstring with a little elastic at the back.

According to wikipedia a bunting is a term used to describe a festive decoration made from fabric. Buntings, also known a pennants, garland, or banners are everywhere these days. They are very easy to make with scrap fabrics. They seem to come in every shape and size.

So, you might be wondering why anyone would want to read a blog on a Kindle? Black Friday Finds

Yesterday was a big shopping day in the United States. Most shoppers went to the malls and the big discount stores. I went to my favorite thrift store. I scored 4 sheets and 7 pillowcases. I'm loving these funky green and blue flower prints.

How did you do on Black Friday?

Announcement, Introduction and a Prize

Ok... my dear readers and friends... I am filled with conflicting emotions as I write this... on the one hand I am sad to be letting go of this wonderful blog, but know it is the best decision for the blog and its readers. On the other hand I am happy to see it go to a good leader and one less thing off my full plate.

I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you through our mutual love of vintage sheets, and hope you will pop over to my personal blog and follow so we can stay in touch.

I hope you will all understand my reasons for this switch and welcome the new owner of The Vintage Sheet Blog with open arms....

I would like to introduce you all to Heather, she has some really wonderful and amazing ideas and things planned.... so exciting!

Tell us about yourself.

I live in Southern California, about 5 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. I love running on the beach, baking, making cards for our troops, sewing, and thrifting. I have an Etsy store where I share my thrifted finds called, Grow Home.

How many vintage sheets do you have right now?
I probably have about 20 or so, plus pillowcases.

Any fun projects planned using VS?

I’m planning on sewing pajama bottoms for all the girls in my family for Christmas. Last year I made owl bags for 2 of my sisters and my niece from vs and scrap fabric.

How long have you been collecting vs's?

It has only been a few years but I’m hooked!

Where do you find your VS's?

I have a few favorite thrift stores that usually have a good selection of vs. I also find great sheets at estate sales.

The Vintage Sheet Blog can be pretty time consuming. Why did you want to take it on?

I have been following the blog for a few years now and I love it. I love all the tutorials, projects, and community of blog readers. Before reading the blog post about wanting to make a change, I had been thinking about ideas for the blog. I think it may have been serendipity. J

What kinds of fun things can we look forward to seeing on the blog in the future?

The blog was already in the process of a mini-makeover. No huge overhaul, just updated graphics and such. We’ll have projects highlighted in weekly link up parties. I love giveaways so I’m hoping that we have lots of goodies from our sponsors. VS friends are so warm and talented, I’d like to find ways we can give back to those in need. I have a lot of ideas but I am certainly open to suggestions.

Future of The Vintage Sheet Blog

Yes, I am alive and we are all moved if not settled into our second new home this year... I am sooo over moving!

I am feeling extremely overwhelmed these days with all my regular mom duties and un-packing and moving into the new house... and now trying to home Pre school my son so he can go to kindergarten next fall, on top of it all my friend Lisa and I are getting a large booth space in Jan. in a local antique shop... which I need to do to help out our family's bottom line... and some how not neglect my personal blog... and do what I enjoy most....making things some where in all that.

In the process of all this I feel like the Vintage Sheet Blog is getting neglected and not living up to its fullest potential.

Here is where you come in.... I am looking for someone who wants to take over the vintage sheet blog and take it to new heights. It would be really amazing to have someone running it who actually has time to make amazing things out of vintage sheets and post about them as well as everyone else's amazing VS creations.

Guest Post- Journal Cover

This fun post is from my friend and blog designer Heather Bluhm of Bluhm Studios. She is currently working on some new buttons and a few other changes to give the VS blog a face lift. EXCITING!

On to her post...

Like many of you, I have a l~~ove~~ lust for vintage sheets. I see them all over Pinterest and blogs and there are so many fabulously creative things made from them that it makes me want to lock myself in my studio for days to try everything. When Jen posted her plea for guest bloggers I knew I wanted to help her out so I dug into my picture file and pulled out these pictures of a journal I made using a vintage sheet for the cover.

I was super excited the day I found this sheet. It was at our local hospital auxiliary shop, where I often run across cool vintage sheets. The colors were so fun and shabby and the sheet is BIG so it has given me lots of yardage to play with. I have a pillow floating around somewhere that uses a few scraps of this as well.

The cover is essentially made by making a sort of "pillow case" for a board insert that wraps around the journal. The signatures are sewn into the cover by my machine in this instance. I like to use lots of recycled papers, envelopes, etc for my pages, as you can see below. I liked the sheet had a top band with a bit of piping before the stripes started so I just cut it as was and then added some lace to the edge of the flap. I embellished it with some crumpled tulle, fabric scraps and vintage lace. Its pretty simple compared to some of my books but I like the effect and the entire things closes with velcro.

Guest Post- Using Solid Vintage Sheets

Today's fun post is from Michelle from Michelle's Romantic Tangle..... There may be something exciting going on at her blog... so go check it out.

When you're searching thrift stores and estate sales for vintage sheets, don't forget to look at the solids. There are some great percale cottons out there that you can use for the sashings and backgrounds of your vintage sheet quilts. Or, if you find a color you really love, make a two color quilt. Instructions for the quilt shown are here.

The sheets may or may not have their labels. What you're really hoping to find is 100% percale cotton. The nicest ones are as good or better than brand new cotton from the quilt shop and can be found in some great vintage colors. But I don't worry about if it's 100% cotton or not -- as long as it feels nice and the price is right, it'll find its way into my sewing room.

I've found the best solid sheets at estate sales. A couple of times it was whole closets full that they were practically giving away. After finding that first closet and leaving most of it behind, I learned the hard way that there's no such thing as too many white sheets in my stash, not if they're wonderful sturdy cotton with no stains. When I'm busy quilting, I can go through yards and yards of the stuff.

In addition to sashings and backgrounds, I use solid sheets as backings and bindings for my own quilts. The cotton can be difficult to wrestle a hand needle through, but to have a binding that matches the rest of my quilt, I'm willing to struggle a bit with a thimble.

Find yourself some solids -- they're a great addition to your vintage sheet stash!

Little Girls Aprons

Sorry this apron week has been so spotty... I have had a lot going on in my personal life... I just spent 8 hours at the hospital with my baby niece who is 9 months old... You can read more about her on my other blog.

These darling aprons were submitted by one of our readers named Jen... there are a lot of us Jen's in the world. She doesn't have a blog but I still wanted to share her darling aprons.

The straps are vintage fabric and the body of the apron is made from vintage sheets

Not only are the aprons darling but so are the girls!

Reversible Pillow Case Apron

The first apron I am featuring was made by Sophia of Sophia's Sundries. I love the fact that this apron is reversible... you get two looks out of one pillow case.... CLEVER!

Apron Week- Finally

Thought it would be fun to start off with some fun facts about aprons. My grandma actually emailed this to me and I love it... I have a collection of vintage aprons and the girls and I wear them...especially when we cook holiday meals.

Notice that a "MEDIUM" is a 14-16...

Remember making an apron in Home Ec? Read below:

The History of 'APRONS'

I don't think our kids
know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apronwas to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing
hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apronwas used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow,
bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved herapron, and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons. REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill
to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love...

I chose some of my favorite vintage sheets. I used a drinking glass to make a template and then I traced the template onto the VS's ... and cut them out.

I then hand sewed them on with some aqua embroidery floss... it took a bit of time but looks super cute... I can change it some day if I want to this way.

Vintage Sheet Party Decor

Just wanted to share my use of Vintage sheets in Scarlette's Beach Birthday Party.

I made this beach blanket especially for the party.. I love how it turned out and we have since used it again at the beach... the best part about it... other than being pretty .. is the sand doesn't stick to it...it shakes right off!

Vintage sheet streamers tied on a string... these were mostly all just scraps and some ribbon mixed in.

Only bummer was it was a bit windy!!

SUPPLY LIST

19×45 inch vinyl nap mat
Fabric of choice-– if using yard goods you will need 4 yards of fabric-– pre wash your fabric!
Fusi-Boo (fusible quilt batting)– small pack 60×60 is more than enough
1 package bias trim to go with fabric of choice
¼ yard of 2 inch thick Nu-Foam if making optional pillow*
1 package 1.5 inch thick elastic to make optional security band*
Walking foot for your machine if you have it

Welcome to baby week... I thought it might be fun to have a theme this week and what is more fun than babies.

Today's Feature is actually what inspired me to do a baby themed week.

Something more than a quilt... not that I don't love VS Quilts... just trying to get some variety.. Still submit the baby quilts.. I may do one day just of baby quilts all on one post.

This tutorial is from Amy of Gabriel's Good Tidings... She turned vintage sheets and a vintage door in to wall art. So clever. Amy has sent me two other fun tutorials that I will be posting soon as well.

Finished product. The fun thing is you can switch out the fabric when you get tired of it.

Ruffly Pillow Cover Tutorial

This tutorial is actually by MOI.. Crazy I know.

Accuquilt was nice enough to offer me a GO! Baby die cut machine if I used it for a tutorial... So here it is. I was so excited to get the GO! Baby... it works amazingly and is so simple that my kids can operate it.

All White Vintage Sheet Ruffly Pillow Cover Tutorial.

This has probably been done before somewhere in blog land... but I really wanted to make this.

Materials: Fabric- I used a white vintage sheet. You will need around two yards of fabric for ruffles.. you need the length.

Pillow form, thread and regular sewing notions.

This is the finished Product.

Start with a pillow form.. Mine is 16"x16".

Cut out a front for your pillow adding an inch all the way around for 1/2" seam allowances. Notice my sweet Scarlette Grace under the table... such a helper.

Cut out two pieces for the back. When you put the two together they should measure 17" tall(or your pillow height) and 24" wide or 6-7" bigger than your front.

Now on to the fun part with my new GO! Baby. I got to choose 3 dies, So I chose a square,triangle and the 2.5" strips.

Here is my fabric layered on the die getting ready to be cut. You can cut up to 6 layers of fabric. AMAZING!!!

Follow this link to get your free patterns.

You cover the die and the fabric with a cutting mat before it goes through the machine.

This made strip cutting sooooo fast.. can't wait to use it for quilt binding.

You just turn the handle and....

This is what comes out.. I took off the excesses scraps from the sides, which you will see in the next picture.

Very little waste.

My lovely assistant once again being super helpful..

Then you are going to ruffle up your strips. I chose not to finish the edges as I like the frayed look. I have a ruffler foot for my machine which is sooo worth it. If you don't have one you can do the old school method of gathering. Turn you stitch to the widest width and sew down the middle of the strip... do not back stitch... then pull one thread to make desired gathers.

I made 7 ruffled strips for my pillow.. you can do more or less depending on size of pillow and desired effect.

Set ruffles aside for a minute...

Take one of your pillow back pieces and serg or zig zag one of the vertical edges, then fold over at least an inch and sew in place. Repeat this on other back piece. These new finished edges will be the opening for the back of your pillow.

Overlap back pieces about 4" and machine stitch bottom and top edge 1/4" seam allowance.

This is how you back should look on the inside. Set aside.

Now pin ruffles to pillow front.. Making sure to pin first and last ruffle at least 1" from top and bottom edges.

Stitch ruffles in place

With right sides together pin pillow front to back, making sure to catch ruffles in outside edges but not bottom or top

I then serged all the way around inside to make it look nice, you could also zig zag.

Stuff pillow form inside and....

now you have an amazing pillow!!

It looks cute with ruffles going either way.

I was looking on flickr at one of the VS quilting bee's I am in and there was a post that said " Check out Jen of Rosey Little Things( My other Blog) ... I was a little scared since I am WAY behind on bee blocks.
